These are images of the Citra (Florida) wildfire, spring 2001.
This fire is a "muck fire"
which started along the edge of drought-dry Orange Lake
in Marion
County (north central Florida). Muck fires are very difficult to extinguish; they burn a long time,
especially when they are burning deep--reportedly in this case, the fire in places was burning at 14
feet deep. At the time these pictures were taken, the fire had been burning for several weeks.
U.S. Highway 301 has been closed numerous times as a result.
