Aquatic plants play an important role in maintaining water quality by providing valuable habitat and dissolved oxygen for fish and wildlife populations. Module 2 begins with a 15 minute audio-visual presentation featuring Becca the bass, who gives a colorful account of her experience as a fish in Florida’s freshwater environments, a place where the oxygen content changes constantly, see A Fish Tale AV Presentation. Key concepts, such as photosynthesis, respiration and decomposition are defined and explained. Students will learn how invasive plants make life more difficult, especially for fish and aquatic organisms relying on dissolved oxygen for survival. Content from this presentation builds on the key concepts about native, non-native and invasive plants discussed in Module 1 — Silent Invaders. However, it may also be used as a stand-alone activity or a supplement to other curricula about photosynthesis and respiration.

The presentation is further supported by a variety of related activities. Concept maps and reading activities reinforce vocabulary and “big picture” concepts. The Hydrilla Game provides a fun hands-on introduction to how quickly and easily invasive plants are spread. A DVD presentation and activity about careers in freshwater environments informs students of how they can make a difference.

See below for overview of available activities and also see Table of Contents for detailed listing—all of which are available online or by request.

Key Objectives

  • Identify the role of dissolved oxygen in aquatic ecosystems
  • Identify factors that influence dissolved oxygen concentrations in the water
  • Define photosynthesis, respiration, and decomposition
  • Identify the role invasive plants play in aquatic ecosystems
  • Identify positive actions we can take to help our aquatic ecosystems, including careers in aquatic plant management
