Algal Biomass

MAIN INDEX

ALGAL BIOMASS is the amount of algae in a waterbody at a given time.

Since it is impossible to count zillions of individual algal units, scientists estimate the amount of algae by using light to measure the amount of chlorophyll visible in a sample of water. (Chlorophyll is a component of each tiny alga plant.) In this web site, all estimates of the amount of algal biomass in a waterbody are based on scientifically-standard chlorophyll measurements.
