Landoltia punctata
(Spirodela punctata)
Non-Native in Florida
According to Godfrey, Landoltia punctata is naturalized here, having been
introduced as an aquarium plant. Wunderlin says this plant (as Spirodela punctata)
is native to Florida, and calls it "dotted duckweed". The name "dotted duckweed" is confusing
when applied to this plant because there are distinct red dots on many individuals of the native
giant duckweed, Spirodela polyrhiza, but there are none on this species. (The term
"dotted" apparently refers to the barely visible ridge of "dots" on the leaf surface of
Landoltia
punctata.)
Landoltia punctata is a small, non-native, floating plant which can grow into dense masses in stagnant water bodies. Landoltia punctata usually has two leaves attached together. The leaves are shoe-shaped, which makes it resemble a large Lemna species. Landoltia punctata has 2-5 roots descending from each leaf.
