This spectacular native shrub, with large scarlet flowers, is a butterfly-attractor. In Florida, it is occasionally found growing in swamps from the peninsula to the central panhandle and Okaloosa County. It blooms in the summer. There are 13 species of Hibiscus in Florida (Wunderlin, 2003). Scarlet rose-mallow grows along river banks of the southeastern U.S.-- but is rare in Alabama and Mississippi (Kartesz, 1999).
