Florida lobelia is native to Florida's wet flatwoods, cypress pond margins and bogs. It is frequent to the central and western panhandle and blooms from summer to fall (Wunderlin, 2003). It is one of thirteen Lobelia species in the state.

There are about 100 species and varieties of Lobelia in the U.S.; this species also occurs from North Carolina to Texas (Kartesz, 1999).
