Serenoa repens is a flowering, perennial, wetland shrub that is commonly found in wet to dry flatwoods and hammocks throughout the state of Florida (Wunderlin, 2003). Saw palmetto blooms from spring to summer and usually occurs in non-wetlands (estimated probability 67%-99%), but occasionally found in wetlands (estimated probability 1%-33%)..

It has a variety of pharmacological and culenary uses, as the fruits, leaves and seeds are all edible. Saw palmetto is located in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina and possibly Texas (Kartesz, 1999).
