Buttonbush is a native, wetland plant commonly found growing in swamps, cypress ponds, and lake, pond, and river margins.. One species of Cephalanthus occurs in Florida (Wunderlin, 2003).

Buttonbrush is a native found throughout the entire eastern half of the United States and Canada, and is also found in Arizona and California (Kartesz, 1999).
