Woodwardia virginica is a flowering, perennial, wetland fern that occurs almost always (estimated probability 99%) under natural conditions in wetlands.

The Virginia chain fern is commonly found in wet hammocks, marshes and swamps nearly throughout Florida (Wunderlin, 2003).

It is located throughout the eastern United States and parts of Canada (Kartesz, 1999).
