Species Overview

Blue maidencane might be encountered as an area of medium height blue-green grass with lance-shaped leaves. Look closely to see that the leaves have white edges. Deer eat blue maidencane. Only one species of Amphicarpum occurs in Florida (Wunderlin, 1998). Blue maidencane is present in FL and GA, and is rare in AL, SC and NC (Kartesz, 1999).

Species Characteristics

Blue maidencane is a grass. Stems slender, to 3 ft. tall; leaf blades with narrow white edges, flat, slender lance-shaped, about 4 in. long, having parallel lines; sheaths hairy; inflorescence at stem tip, with few branches, spikelets and flowers; spikelets oblong to narrowly lance-shaped, to 1/2 in. long; also has underground flowers and fruits.
